Touch

Another long overdue blog post ... but for a good cause.

A few weeks ago I was sent a "Call for Artists" ... for a Mother's May exhibition to raise funds for the Women & Children's Hospital Foundation.

So despite a few hiccups and the fact that it ended up as a framed print and not a 30x40 canvas, I was able to offer this.

Click on the word "Touch" below to be taken to the work on Redbubble

Entitled "Touch" I hoped it represented the bond between mother and child which needs no spoken language with the unnecessary words indistinct in the background.

It is currently being exhibited in Gallery A in the hospital, and will be until May 30th.  You will find Gallery A by entering the hospital via the Kermode Street entrance, and turning left just past the bottom of the stairs.

It is amongst works by established artists, mums and kids, staff of the hospital, Adelaide photographers and local identities (I told Catherine Lambert about it and couldn't keep her away!!)

Now I realise that many of you may not have the time to get in to view the exhibition or indeed the money to purchase the original work, so I have decided to make the work available on Redbubble, as a postcard, greeting card, laminated, mounted, canvas and framed print, with all proceeds going to the Foundation.

I hope you'll all consider going to the exhibition, or at least purchasing an image  - WCH does a lot of wonderful work for the people of South Australia - and it's lovely to be able to give something back!

Oh and btw - the exquisite watercolours were used in the Launch invites and Call for Artists - and are by the incredibly talented Emma Kate Creative - see more of her work here.

Oh and btww - the lovely cupcakes we all snacked on were baked by the very clever @Monnie of Cupcake Treats

I sent an email …..

….. to a man named David Thorne.

David Thorne is the man behind the satirical, laugh till you cry,  “wish I had the cohunes to say that” website that is 27b/6.com.

Around 4.00pm on the 24th of March, @27bslash6 tweeted that he was bored, and stated that the first three people to send him a photograph with a smiley face on their face would win a book, mug, tshirt and a mystery prize!

So, grabbing a nearby child and my trusty Bic, I added the aforementioned smiley to my son’s lovely fresh kid skin and took the photo below and sent it off.  This wasn’t done out of the kindness of his heart mind you, he wanted his share if we actually won something.

Snapshot_20100324--blog

Now given that this was late afternoon, and I’m a mum and I work and I blog and I’m tired … oops sorry … I got off the computer and got on with life in the real world, thinking that if I was successful I would receive a tweet back or such.

So endeth that day, and so onto the next one, and I receive a tweet from @MagpiePants asking if she can have the prizes I won … I won??  Indeed – and a link to the 27b/6.com site reveals this:

Smile

It seems somehow that being at work at the time, I missed this tweet – kindly retweeted for your viewing pleasure by one of the other winners.

RT Winners
Now given that Mr Thorne had misspelt my name on the website, there was a pretty good chance that I had not received a tweet sent perhaps to an @CathyTrenant, and I really did want my prize, so I emailed him on the evening of the 25th March – most of which appears below.

Oooh!!  Ooh!!

It's me .... Cathie Tranent.

Sorry I didn't realise I'd won ....
My address is:
Cathie Tranent xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
SA xxxxx

Yay!!

Another South Aussie - and I'm really sorry I didn't get back to you sooner!!

Cheers,

Cathie

Five days later, and with still no response, I checked to see whether my name had been corrected or some other comment added, but nothing.

In fact, the entire competitions page is no longer on the site.

So I sent this email:

Email2

I even sent another copy of the kid’s photo just to prove it really was us.

To date – which is now nearly 4 weeks after, not only have Connor and I not received our prize pack, there has not even been a damn email to acknowledge any of my correspondence.

Quite frankly Mr Thorne, I’m quite over the fact that your “internet playground” hasn’t delivered what it promised – I’m an adult and quite used to that – what I do find really ignorant is that you couldn’t even bother to reply – quite ironic given that you have gained most of your fame through “emails”.

Oh yeah – and perhaps you could be the one to explain to my son why his mug and tshirt hasn’t arrived - ‘cos you can be sure I won’t be buying him one after this.

**News Flash**

On May 27th at some stupid hour of the morning, I was sitting on Twitter when David tweeted about some jobs he should have been doing, to which I replied "or you could respond to my email" - to which I received a DM with an apology and a request to email my details again.  I've done so .. and so now we wait :)

** News Flash Flash**

Surprise surprise - it is now July 30th and we've received a big ...... fat ............nothing!

Acoustic, Naturally

Playing around with some vectors the other day, and thought that the good old generic, acoustic guitar just doesn't get enough "press".

So here it is - complete with bluebirds of happiness ... and no defiant gestures - 'cause acoustics just aren't like that!

Flashback

I love a good read - and all the works in the book - nay, all the works in the group are 150 words or less - just brilliant for a person with a short attention spa ..... oh look at the pretty birdy or those with limited time for literature appreciation!

Like many others, I had been waiting impatiently for the book to be released - and lo and behold it hasn't disappointed with my all time favourite FF work "Pull My Finger" the very first volley fired!

You'll find the book available for sale at Blurb - for the exceptionally
amazing price of $9.50 AUD.

#TwiTeDeDa

Hmm.  Long time no post.

So long in fact, that it is now November, and Twitter is filled with #NaNoWriMo, which is National Novel Writer's Month.

Great way for writers to get together - write, publicise and generally run amok!

So I thought - what a great idea, and decided we should do something similar for tshirt designers!!

So I"ve coined the tag #TwiTeDeDa - Twitter Tshirt Designers Day and designed a tshirt in celebration!

So now I reckon it's up to you all - spread the word - design a tshirt - upload it, publicise it and above all - tag it #TwiTeDeDa!!

There's No Such Thing As A Silly Question

Has always been one of my most used expressions - and now it's a book - a really, really helpful book.

To give it it's full title:

There's No Such Thing As A Silly Question

A practical guide for families living with a
child with chronic illness, disability, mental
illness or a life-threatening condition

This is a marvellous FREE book (or downloadable PDF) published by the Woman's and Children's Hospital Foundation for parents who find themselves with a seriously sick kid.

Based on a similar Victorian publication, the book has all kinds of really useful information - but it's not a dry, dusty list of agencies or specialists - it's a whole lot more.

The publication includes sections such as: ‘Where do I begin?’, ‘Going into Hospital’, ‘Who Will Help Us in the Community’, and ‘How to Give Life Balance’. There is also a handy glossary and lists of publications, resources and services included.

In easy to find chapters, it deals with so much that you need to know -  ranging from pre-diagnosis to palliative care for your child - and everything in between.

Written in plain English it's sprinkled with quotes and tips from other parents who have dealt with the same situation - for example:

“Access and set up a website for your child. If treatment is intense and/or long it will save you having to repeat yourself numerous times to everyone wanting to know how things are going - they can just read updates on the website. It saves time and often - your sanity!”

(Kimberlee – parent)

It covers an amazingly wide range of information - things like getting a second opinion, setting up a care plan for your child right through to financial considerations and maintaining some semblance of "normality" for yourself, your partner and of course, your other children.

At 120 pages, it's no lightweight pamphlet - but hey - the subject's no lightweight matter either!

I haven't had anything to do with the creation or publication of this book, and we're blessed with two pretty damn healthy kids, but it's just such a wonderful idea I wanted to help spread the word.

Besides - it reminds me of one of my other favourite sayings .....

You don't have to know everything - just someone who does!!

To organise a hard copy of the book:

The Definitive Guide to Marketing

The internet is full of serious hints and tips on marketing your product, advertising your product and generally getting your product (or your brand) "out there".

So that you can make the most of all the good advice available, I would like to offer a glossary of advertising terms.

This will clear up any confusion ...

You're a woman and you see a handsome man at a party.
You go up to him and say, "I'm fantastic in bed."
That's Direct Marketing.

You're at a party with a bunch of friends and see a handsome man.
One of your friends goes up to him and pointing at you says, "She's fantastic in bed."
That's Advertising..

You see a handsome man at a party.
You go up to him and get his telephone number.
The next day you call and say, "Hi, I'm fantastic in bed."
That's Telemarketing.

You see a man at a party, you straighten your dress.
You walk up to him and pour him a drink.
You say, "May I," and reach up to straighten his tie, brushing your breast lightly against his arm...
And then say, "By the way, I'm fantastic in bed."
That's Public Relations.

You're at a party and see a handsome man.
He walks up to you and says, I hear you're fantastic in bed."
That's Brand Recognition.

You're at a party and see a handsome man.
He fancies you, but you talk him into going home with your friend.
That's a Sales Representation.

Your friend can't satisfy him so she calls you.
That's Technical Support.

You're on your way to a party when you realize that there could be handsome
men in all these houses you're passing. So you climb onto the roof of
one situated towards the centre and shout at the top of your lungs, "I'm fantastic in bed!"
That's Junk Mail.

Tee-ming with Stuff!

Busy week in the world of Cathie Tees this week!

I was lucky enough to have my second TeeCraze.com feature with Some Days ... the first being my Music Machines entry - Evolution.

Today I found out that my Scribble shirt was featured on the Redbubble homepage yesterday and I missed it - thanks to RB member Sanne for the little screen dump!!

Gibson - Vale Les Paul

Those of you who have been familiar with my work for some time will remember "Live Life Loud", a tshirt I made for my hubby's 40th birthday party costume.

Well, in the interests of equality and indeed as a bit of a personal tribute to the passing of the legendary Les Paul, I have come up with a Gibson version.

I think I actually prefer this to the Fender version ... lol... but isn't that like picking your favourite kid??

10 Things I Like About Me

After reading's Jordan's blog which was inspired by reading Definatalie's blog, I have decided to have a crack at the interweb's newest mini-meme!

It's easy for most of us to find something to criticise about ourselves - but a list of things you like
about yourself is bound to take a little more work!

So here goes - my time starts, NOW!

  • I'm a great repository for stuff that you didn't think you needed to know. (Great skill for winning quiz shows!)
  • I'm enthusiastic - if I'm involved in something I give it my all.
  • I'm friendly - very rarely bite, and think I get on with most people.
  • I take the odd half decent photo, and have designed a few not bad tshirts!
  • I'm generous with my time and talents. (Read: I do a lot of stuff for friends for nothing)

Phew - halfway there .... this is hard work!

  • My need to know "stuff" - see point 1 actually. (Google is my friend)
  • My sense of humour.
  • My loyalty to my family be they the real ones or my bestest friends.
  • My optimism - I a half full kinda person (hic)

Ugh - that's nine ... close enough ..... ooh - hang on .................. drum roll please ..............

  • I'm NOT a perfectionist - but I do try hard!

So now - tradition decrees that you sail off and write your own list - or if not - add the things you love about you as a comment here.

Evolution

Well, Redbubble and Demo Stores are at it again.

They have launched a third collaborative competition, Music Machines, where again the winners will get to have tshirts hanging in their store in Carnaby Street. Yep - real shirts - on real mannequins in a shop!

After immediately having a couple of ideas, I spent a good week frustratingly trying to translate them from my brain to "paper" .. and finally came up with this!

I was surprised tonight to receive an email from the amazingly talented Yanmos with this fabulous mock up of a "real" person wearing my shirt!! Thanks Yannis!

So, there you go .. I can't imagine that this will do as well as my other Demo competition entry, but hey - I've given it my best shot!

As usual ... the pictures are links to buy!
